Symbols of Mortality Online Conference 2026

Mortality symbolism often refers to the use of objects, ideas, images and literal phrases to represent the inevitability of death. Such symbols can also represent the reflection of life now past, commemorating a specific ideal. Although images of skulls and skeletons are deemed the de facto symbolic face of death, the subject matter is, in fact, varied and wide-ranging. The aim of this unique conference, therefore, is to introduce to the public to just some of these wonderous representations of impermanence, in all their glory.
So, why not join us for a FREE day of enthralling talks on the subject of mortality symbolism! Exploring an ecletic and varied range of topics, ranging from Victorian mourning to funerary art, a little slice of Egyptomania, pet cemeteries, Indian temple symbolism, literature zombies and much, much more. The amazing line-up of speakers include, in no particular order, Dr Helen Frisby, Fran Flett Hollinrake, Sarah Shepherd, Cat Irving, Dr Aoife Sutton-Butler, Dr Robyn S Lacy, Dr Terri Sabatos, Dr Dan O'Brien, Michelle Keeley-Adamson, Chris Woodyard, Rosie Fiore, Dr Stephanie Holton, Stephen Callaghan, Hollie Willis, Dr Lucja Lange, Dr Veenat Arora, Dr Tony Alcala, with more to be announced.
